Tomatoes Can be Big Business
Unless you live on a farm and pick your own tomatoes, you probably have to go to a store to select yours. In most cases, the vegetable you take home with you has had a long but well tended trip from the farm to your kitchen. Today’s tomatoes may be grown either in fields or greenhouses but they are typically processed through plants using automated equipment. Here they are washed, sorted, and made ready for their final destination. This is the tomato packing step. The vegetables may be loosely boxed or sorted and placed in shrink-wrapped packaging, for instance. However they are packaged, their are usually now on their way to their final destination and a consumer.
