Gastric Bypass Surgery Has Good Points and Bad
The vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) is one way in which people who are grossly overweight can lose their excess weight. The procedure involves removing a portion of the stomach, so that a person will not be able to eat as much. There are some advantages and disadvantages to this type of surgery. VSG does reduce the stomach size. It also eliminated the part of the stomach that produces hormones that stimulate hunger and minimizes the chance of an ulcer forming. It is best for patients who have a high BMI. On the downside, VSG often has to be repeated on patients who have a high BMI. So called soft calorie foods like ice cream can be absorbed thus slowing weight loss. And VSG is not reversible. Before deciding to have this procedure a patient should look at all of the good and bad aspects of the procedure.
